Created for the "Plato's Atlantis Collection", the last one that Alexander McQueen fully designed before he took his life in 2010, with their sculptural shape and their 30 cm heels, the armadillo are legend.
They were part of a collection inspired by Darwin's theory and they got baptized armadillo for their armor-like appearance. In McQueen's words they were created "to morph from the leg to give the illusion of a ballerina standing on point". Despite their fame and many famous fans around the world, including Lady Gaga who was the first one to wear them in the music video of Bad Romance, they never went into production and therefore there are just 21 pair of Armadillo in the world. And now 3 of them are auctioned by Christies to raise money for UNICEF's relief efforts in Nepal.
